Cherry Valley Days
Cherry Valley, IL
The Highland Games have been thrilling crowds for centuries. The games, themselves, often consist of both light athletics, like dancing, bicycle racing, and other track events, and heavy athletics. And though the thought of a bunch of skinny folk prancing about sets my heart a twitter, this organization is about the heavy athletes. Though it started as a male-only competition, featuring the stout and brave pitting their strength and skill against fellow clansmen to showcase their martial prowess, the games have evolved into a purely athletics competition open to anyone who is willing to take a crack at it and presently attracts an eclectic array of athletes. Men and women, young and old, we, the athletes gather for sport and camaraderie, giving the games as much a feel of a family reunion as a sporting event. The spirit of the games inspires true sportsmanship where it is not uncommon to see rivals help each other as well as helping novices become better.
They enjoyed us so much last year, they're having us back! We look forward to throwing again at this great festival.
May 10th turned out to be a great day for a game, concluding with the clean & press of a most uncooperative stone. For more details, head on over to the games page.
June 21st was a blustery day which was a mixed blessing: it kept the clouds moving but it also made sheaf & caber a special challenge. Otherwise, it was a great time and we're grateful to the festival for having us back.
July 26th saw the 2nd annual Lake City Highland Games in Lake City, MN. A lot of great throwers showed to make this our biggest event yet. Thank you Lake City tourism board!
